Direct answer

Sandustry water is the real early-game bottleneck. It wets Sand and Seeds, evaporates in about 45 seconds, and is renewed by Ice, Steam or Snow.

Water is the limiting resource of the whole early game. It wets Sand into Wet Sand and Seeds into Wet Seeds, so almost every production line ends up bottlenecked on water throughput rather than on ore. It flows downhill and settles, and loose droplets that are not sitting in a depression evaporate after about 45 seconds, feeding a rain buffer that returns later as precipitation. Sustainable supply is a design problem: melting Ice, condensing Steam, or running a Cryoblaster snow loop.

How to get Water

You can reach Water 3 different ways, which matters because the cheapest route early is rarely the one that scales. It comes out of Ice, Steam and Snow.

MethodFromMachineNotes
Melt Ice with fireIce—Ice yields Water when melted.
Condense SteamSteamCondenserSteam that reaches the Sky condenses and falls as rain.
Cryoblaster snow loopSnowCryoblasterWiki calls Cryoblaster-produced Snow one of the renewable Water sources.

What Water is used for

Downstream of Water you have Wet Sand, Wet Seed, Steam and Ice. Deciding the split between them is a layout question as much as a recipe one.

Wet SeedDirect contact1 Seed + 1 Water -> 1 Wet Seed.

2 of the Water conversions below has a published ratio, which makes throughput planning around it unusually concrete.

Water properties

At density 100, Water sorts itself relative to everything else in the pile, which is often cheaper than filtering it deliberately.

Tips

  • Large volumes of Water are needed for an efficient factory, so plan sustainable sources early.
  • Droplets not in a depression evaporate after ~45 seconds into the rain buffer.

Version notes

The changes below are the reason a Water layout copied from an older video may not work in the current version.

FAQ

How do you get water in Sandustry?

Melt Ice with fire, condense Steam back into Water with a Condenser or by letting it reach the Sky as rain, or run a Cryoblaster snow loop, which the wiki lists as a renewable source.

What is water used for in Sandustry?

Water wets Sand into Wet Sand and Seeds into Wet Seeds, boils into Steam under Fire, and freezes into Ice when Snow lands on deep water.

Why does my water disappear in Sandustry?

Loose droplets that are not sitting in a depression evaporate after roughly 45 seconds. The lost water feeds a rain buffer and returns later as precipitation, so contain it in basins.

Is water renewable in Sandustry?

Yes, with infrastructure. Melting Ice, condensing Steam, and Cryoblaster snow loops all return Water, which is why sustainable supply is worth designing early.

Does water still destroy lava in Sandustry?

No. Demo Hotfix 7 removed that behaviour. Water contacting Lava now evaporates into Steam without consuming the Lava.
